The range of the radios is dependent upon the terrain and is discussed in the article about FRS radios and is also discussed in the article “ How Far Will My Radio Talk?” MURS comprises the following five frequencies: ChannelĪll MURS operations are simplex meaning that the radios talk directly from one radio to another without the help of any infrastructure to increase the range of the radios. The VHF frequencies generally work better outdoors in rural areas than the UHF radios and will provide better range, especially in hilly areas. The MURS radio frequencies are similar to the use of FRS frequencies, except that the MURS frequencies are VHF and the FRS frequencies are UHF. Therefore, we are only presenting portable Walkie Talkie radios and not the mobile and base station options. Both base station and mobile radios are permitted with a base station antenna height no more than 60’ above ground or 20’ above the roof, however, base and mobile use of the frequencies is not very common.

Most use these days is for business use for on site short range communications, however, personal use of these frequencies is permitted. However, there are certain limitations as to the use of these frequencies.
